Tune to Radio 1630 AM
RIDOT has installed highway advisory radio transmitters which are used for major incident response and special event reporting. The transmitters allow RIDOT to broadcast messages on 1630 AM over a 3 mile radius. Two radios, located on I-95 and on I-295 at Route 146, were purchased by the I-95 Corridor Coalition. RIDOT is participating in a regional test conducted by the Coalition to gauge the Highway Advisory Radio (HAR) system's effectiveness.

The radios operate on a low frequency band established by the FCC. The license is specific in it cannot be used in a commercial operation. The benefit of HAR are remote dispatching of messages by operators, which makes access easy and fast, and messages can be long enough to give out potentially life saving information.

Electronic Message Signs
RIDOT’s Transportation Operation Center is currently managing a network of overhead permanent electronic message signs, called Dynamic Message Signs (DMS) and portable variable message signs (VMS) which are deployed in outlying areas on the interstate system to be used in a comprehensive diversionary route plan, which is under development in the Transportation Management Center.

The DMS and VMS are connected to a central controller, located in the Transportation Management Center. This system enables TMC Operators to make instantaneous message changes in response to incidents and changing traffic conditions.

The signs display several timed messages in varied colors. Pre-designed messages and graphics make it easy for an operator to change messages quickly. The signs automatically adjust to lighting conditions.

Closed Circuit Video Surveillance
RIDOT has installed cameras to provide TMC Operators or CSOs with a view of much of the interstate system around the Providence Metropolitan area, and select locations statewide. These cameras enable the TMC to better react to incidents to keep the roadways clear for traffic. The first dome camera and pole, right, were installed at I-95 and I-195. This program will be ongoing and cameras will be added in strategic locations in the future.
