Advanced Transportation Management Systems (ATMS)
The gathering of information through various means and compiling it to
disseminate the information to the public through Advanced Traveler Information
Systems (ATIS).

Advanced Traveler Information Systems (ATIS)
The process of disseminating information collected by highway sensors
to all drivers for pretrip route planning.

Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM)
A method of transmitting/switching video/data using very high speed and
high bandwidth.

Changeable Message Sign (CMS) - Dynamic Message Sign (DMS) -
Variable Message Sign (VMS)
Electronic sign capable of displaying real-time traffic information.

Closed Circuit Television (CCTV) - Surveillance Cameras
RIDOT installed and maintained cameras along highways to locate or verify
incidents. This is a tool that provides a quicker response time
for emergency personnel. (i.e., police, fire, and medical)

Integrated Services Digital Network (ISDN)
A digital telephone service that allows for a combination of voice and
data connections over a single high-speed connection.

Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS)
Advanced communication technology that enhances the existing highway
infrastructure of the facility which improves safety on the highways,
increases capacity on the highways, and makes them function at a more
efficient level.

National Transportation Communication for Intelligent Transportation
Systems Protocol (NTCIP)
Provides a communication standard that ensures the interchangeability
of traffic control and ITS devices.

Rhode Island Department of Transportation (RIDOT) - aka 'The
D.O.T'
Agency responsible for the development and maintenance of the highway
and bridge system in Rhode Island. RIDOT is responsible for right of way
acquisition, transportation planning, design, construction, and maintenance
of their local facilities as well as planning and construction for other
modes of transportation.

Vehicle Detector
Vehicle sensors either embedded in the pavement or mounted above the
freeway to provide vehicle volume, speed, counts, headway, queue lengths,
and vehicle classifications.
